The 1000Bulbs.com 500 is a race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup and takes place on the Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega , Alabama . It is one of a total of four races in which air flow limiters , the so-called “ restrictor plates ”, are used.

Until 1996, the race took place in early August or late July. From the 1997 season, it was moved to early October at the request of the fans to avoid the hot summer temperatures and the unpredictable thunderstorms.

In the 1998 season, the name of the race was changed to that of the spring race . The fall race became known for the next three years as the Winston 500 under the Winston No Bull 5 bonus program.

During the Drivers' Presentation in 2005, Ricky Bobby and other characters were introduced to the fans to film scenes for the movie Ricky Bobby - The King of Racing Drivers.

With the race of the 2007 season, the Car of Tomorrow completed a Restrictor Plate race for the first time .
