The Melm is a pond in the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein on the boundary of the Oggersheim district in the Notwende / Melm settlement , which was created when gravel was extracted . In the years from 2002 to 2006, the water quality was always confirmed to be good to excellent. Until 2009 the pond was operated as a bathing beach by the city itself. Due to necessary renovation measures, high maintenance costs and the declining number of bathers, the city stopped bathing despite the good water quality. Since then, the area, which is to serve the citizens as a local recreation area without a bathing permit, has been overgrown. The European Union then removed the body of water from the list of bathing lakes in 2012.

At bathing time there was a bathing raft on the water and diving platforms one and three meters high on the edge. Admission to the lido was always free, but bathing was at your own risk. For children there was a max. 50 cm deep, separate pool with slide. This basin was filled with sand and is now the center of a playground that is gradually being created. There is also a DLRG guard at the pond .

Melm is originally an old corridor between Oppau and Oggersheim. Actually the melm, but now colloquially the melm means sand, dust and is probably related to the word mulm and grind. The use of the Melm area led to a dispute between Oppau and Oggersheim for centuries.
