Melocactus macracanthos is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet macracanthos means '(Latin macracanthus) large prickly'.

description

Melocactus macracanthos grows with light green or cloudy green, depressed spherical to spherical shoots , which reach heights of up to 25 centimeters with diameters of up to 30 centimeters. There are eleven to 15 (rarely up to 20) ribs that are more or less straight to slightly humped . The thorns are yellowish to brownish. The four unequal central spines - there are occasionally more - are strong and up to 7 centimeters long. The 3 to 4.5 centimeters long eight to 17 radial spines are spread out. The cephalium , which consists of plenty of brown, barely protruding bristles , is up to 24 centimeters high and 13 centimeters in diameter. It is usually significantly smaller than half the diameter of the shoot.

The pink flowers are 1.5 to 2 centimeters long and 0.7 to 1.2 centimeters in diameter. The shiny red, broadly club-shaped fruits are 1.5 to 2 centimeters long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Melocactus macracanthos is common on Curaçao and neighboring islands.

It was first described as Cactus macracanthos in 1820 by Joseph zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck . Heinrich Friedrich Link and Christoph Friedrich Otto put the species in their first description of the genus Melocactus in the genus Melocactus .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
