The Melville Peninsula ( English Melville Peninsula ) is a large peninsula in the Canadian Arctic . Since 1999 it has belonged to the newly founded Nunavut , before that it was part of the Franklin District ( Northwest Territories ). The Fury and Hecla Straits separates the peninsula from Baffin Island . To the east of the peninsula is the Foxe Basin , to the west is the Gulf of Boothia .
