The Franklin District (English. District of Franklin ) was a former administrative unit of the Canadian Northwest Territories . The district was in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago in the Arctic Ocean and consisted of Ellesmere Island , the more northern Queen Elizabeth Islands and the Parry Islands to the south .

The Melville and Boothia peninsulas on mainland Canada also belonged to the district . The English navigators Martin Frobisher and Henry Hudson were the first known Europeans to visit this northern Canadian island world. The area was transferred from British colonial administration to Canadian self-government in 1894.

Together with the Keewatin District and the Mackenzie District , the Franklin District formed the former Northwest Territories of Canada (until 1870: Northwest Territories ), until the creation of the Nunavut Territory in 1999. The Franklin District was located between the Northwest Territories. Territories and Nunavut divided. The Victoria Island was divided to two thirds fell to the new territory and third remained with the Northwest Territories. Responsibility for other islands was also shared in order to give the Inuit independent territory.
