Melvin George Talbert
Melvin George Talbert (born June 14, 1934 in Clinton , Louisiana ) is an American Methodist bishop .
Life
Talbert studied theology at Southern University in Baton Rouge . He was elected bishop of the United Methodist Church in 1980 and remained in that office until August 31, 2000. From 1996 to 1999, Talbert was President of the National Council of Churches . He conducted a blessing service for a same-sex couple on October 26, 2013 at the Covenant Community United Church of Christ in Center Point , Alabama . Talbert is married.
