Melvin Greaves
Sir Melvin "Mel" F. Greaves (born September 12, 1941 ) is a British oncologist .
Life and research
Greaves went to school in Norwich and studied medicine at University College London , majoring in immunology . In 1968 Melvin was awarded a Dr. med. PhD. As a post-doctoral student, Greaves was at the Karolinska Institute near Stockholm from 1968 to 1969 . After this time he conducted research at the Immunology Department of the National Institute for Medical Research in Mill Hill, London ; subsequently, from 1972 for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, and from 1976 as head of the laboratory for immunology at Lincoln's Inn Fields in London. From 1984 to 2003 he was Director of the Leukemia Research Center at the Institute of Cancer Research in London. Since 1985 Greaves has been Professor of Cell Biology at the University of London and Head of the Department of Hemato-Oncology at the Cancer Research Institute in London.
Greaves, who has been involved in cancer research since the 1970s, researched the development of leukemia in children and found evidence of prenatal genesis. Since the malignant prenatal genetic changes lead to leukemia in only around 1% of children, according to Greaves further factors must be added after birth, whereby Greaves pursues, among other things, the hypothesis of sufficient exposure to antigens, which is necessary for the development of adequate immune defense , and the lack of which can trigger a specifically abnormal immune reaction to common infections ( delayed infection hypothesis ).
According to Greaves, almost all cancer cases are multi- causal and usually also have causes that are subject to individual control.
