Mendeleevskaya
Mendeleevskaya ( Russian Менделеевская ( )) is an underground subway station of the Moscow Metro on the Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya Line (also known as the Gray Line ). It was put into operation on December 31, 1988 and was named after the chemist Dmitri Mendeleev ( architect Nina Alexandrowna Aljoschina ).
The station is 48.5 meters below the surface of the earth. It is located in the north of central Moscow on Novoslobodskaya Street, which leads out of town towards Dmitrov . A little to the north of the station entrance is the notorious Butyrka prison , to the south the metro station Novoslobodskaya borders the ring line . There is a direct transition from Mendeleevskaya to this station, which can be reached via the stairs in the middle of the platform. The only entrance or exit can be reached from the northern end of the platform via escalators . These lead into the ticket hall of the train station, from where you can reach the exit via a pedestrian underpass under Novoslobodskaya Street. Alternatively, you can leave the subway station at Novoslobodskaya station, which has its own exit.
The subway station has a wide central platform, which is divided into three parts by two arcade-like rows of columns. The cladding of the walls and pillars is kept entirely in white. The rows of candlesticks on the three vaults of the platform are striking: In an allusion to the station's namesake, their frames look like stylized molecular compounds . At the southern end of the platform there is a mosaic composition with a portrait of Mendeleev under the vault.
The station is also known for the memorial erected in February 2007 for the stray dog " Maltschik ", who lived near the station for several years and was killed at the end of 2001 by a mentally ill young woman. The small bronze sculpture, which is supposed to encourage the public to treat neglected pets in a more humane way, is in the Mendeleevskaya ticket hall in the middle between the entrance doors and the platform barriers.
