The menhir San Totaro or del Teofilo

The menhir (di) San Totaro (also Menhir del Teofilo , locally called Santu Tortaro or de lu chiofilu ) stands on the side of the road in Via Teofilo, in the area of the junction with Via Stefano Sergio, in Martano in the province of Lecce in the Salent region in the south of Apulia in Italy .

The 4.7 m high menhir with a cross section of 48 × 33 cm is the tallest monolith in Puglia.

An ancient underground oil press ( Frantoio ipogeo in Italian ) was discovered nearby .

The 79 Apulian menhirs are partly geometric and slim (Casamassima). Others have anthropomorphic or dew-cross-like ( Menhir of Vardare in Diso ) proportions.

Nearby is the Specchia dei Mori.
