Menhir from Brachwitz

The Brachwitz menhir was a prehistoric menhir near Brachwitz , a district of Wettin-Löbejün in the Saalekreis , Saxony-Anhalt . It was destroyed around 1910.

location

The stone was near the Saale Mountains (Brachwitz Alps?), About 400 m from the Saale. The area is very rich in prehistoric sites. There are several burial mounds and stone box graves to the north and east of Brachwitz . On the opposite bank of the Saale there are more burial mounds near Halle - Lettin . There are also several other menhirs in the vicinity: the Menhir of Morl is to the northeast and the Stone Maiden in Halle- Dölau to the southwest .

All that is known about the menhir is that it was still upright until around 1910. Information on material, shape and dimensions is not available.

Finds from the area around the menhir come from the Bandkeramische Kultur , the Aunjetitz culture , the Full Bronze Age , the Iron Age and the Slavic early Middle Ages .
