Charmeau menhir
The Menhir of Charmeau (also called Menhir de Broye or Menhir de l'Ouche-à-l'Hôte ) is located in the district of Charmeau, east of the village Broye south of Autun in the Saône-et-Loire department in France . It is one of the few menhirs that still exist in the granite Morvan massif in Burgundy .
The granite menhir was accidentally discovered in 1889 while plowing. Eight pairs of oxen were needed to remove him from the L'Ouche-à-l'Hôte field. In 1913, the approximately 4.65 meter high and 14 tonne monolith was erected a few 100 meters from where it was found on the side of the road.
On one side there are engravings depicting an ax and a stylized adorant .
The menhir was classified as a monument historique in 1992 .
