Menkia horsti is a land-living snail from the family of the Mulmnadeln (Aciculidae) in the order of the Architaenioglossa ("old bandworm").

features

The small, slim, cone-shaped cases are 2.25 to 2.8 mm high and about 0.9 mm wide. They have 5 to 5.5 moderately arched turns with a deep seam. There is no edge or thread under the seam. The mouth does not rise on the penultimate passage. The protoconch is smooth. The ornamentation of the following turns consists of very irregular radial stripes of grooves, with 10 to 18 grooves being formed on the penultimate passage. The radial grooves intersect with spiral lines, on the penultimate passage there are 11 to 18 spiral lines, the spacing of which is not entirely regular. They are also a little less concise than the radial grooves. The spiral sculpture is closest to the base of the case.

In the frontal view, the mouth is irregular and rounded square. The palatal and basal borders are arched and usually flow into one another. In the side view, the edge of the mouth mostly recedes slightly above and below. It can also be bent slightly S-shaped. However, no sinulus is formed. The inside of the mouth is hardly thickened and only slightly expanded at the base. The edge of the mouth is narrowly folded over in the navel area and extends over the navel as a narrow umbilical callus. The parietal callus is thin and not very clear, an angularis is completely absent. A bulge in the neck is also completely missing. The housing is light to dark brownish horn-colored.

Similar species

Due to the striking spiral sculpture of the housing surface, Menkia horsti can hardly be confused with the other recent representatives of the Aciculidae. In the Pliocene Menkia celleneuva , the spiral structure is less strongly developed. The spiral lines are also closer together in Menkia celleneuva than in Menkia horsti .

Geographical distribution, occurrence and way of life

Menkia horsti has so far only been found in a few locations in the northern Spanish province of Asturias (formerly the province of Oviedo). The species occurs from the coast ( Ribadesella ) to (at least) 1550 m high in the Cantabrian Mountains (around Lake La Ercina ). The animals live in humus-rich, rocky soils on limestone.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described in 1985 by Hans D. Boeters , Edmund Gittenberger and Péter Subai . The type locality is a rock face near the cave "Tito Bustillo" in Ribadesella , Oviedo province , Spain . So far, the species is only known from a few sites.

Danger

The species is classified as “near threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
