The Mennonite Church Canada ( French Église Mennonite Canada ) is an association of Mennonite congregations in Canada . The church is a relatively young church. It emerged in 2000 from the union of the Mennonite Church with the General Conference Mennonite Church .

history

The first Mennonites arrived in Canada in 1786. They came mainly from Pennsylvania , where German, Dutch and Swiss Mennonites had already settled at the end of the 17th century ( see also Mennonite emigration ). The Mennonite Church goes back directly to these Central European immigrants of the 17th and 18th centuries. The General Conference Mennonite Church was founded in 1860 by Mennonite congregations in Iowa , USA . It was later joined by Russian mennonites who had emigrated to North America . Both churches were represented in the entire North American area. In 1995 both churches decided to unite. There should be one Mennonite church in the United States and one in Canada. The Mennonite Church Canada was founded in 2000 and the Mennonite Church USA in 2002 . Both sister churches are represented in the Mennonite World Conference today . Both churches use a dove with an olive branch as a symbol, reminding of the biblical story about Noah's Ark .

The hymn book Hymnal: A Worship Book from 1992, used in the congregations of the church, was created in an ecumenical collaboration with the American Church of the Brethren . In 2005 and 2007 two supplementary volumes appeared with Sing The Journey and Sing The Story . The first volume focuses thematically on the time between Pentecost and Advent, the second on the time from Advent to Easter.

Organization and statistics

The Mennonite Church Canada consists of five Regional Conferences in Alberta , British Columbia , Manitoba , Saskatchewan and Eastern Canada. In 2008 the Church had approximately 33,000 members (excluding children and friends).

At the Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg , which emerged from the union of three colleges in 1998, around 1,600 students were enrolled in 2008. The three colleges were the Canadian Mennonite Bible College from 1947, the Concord College , which emerged as the Mennonite Brethren Bible College in 1944 , and the Menno Simons College from 1988.
