Mental Defect (German: psychological disorder) is a five-piece German alternative metal band, which is particularly popular in Eastern Europe and Great Britain due to its cross-style music. Based on this and because of their visual concept, they are sometimes also traded under the collective term Gothic Metal .
history
Mental Defect was founded in 2009 by Tien Nguyen, Clodi Korzin and Sanny-Thomas Wagner as an experimental band project. After various line-up changes, the band was complete in 2010 with guitarist Daniel Korzin and drummer David Sommer. At that time there was no permanent bass player. Nevertheless, they released their first LP longplayer on November 25, 2011 on the independent label Èquinoxe Records , where The House of Usher was already under contract and, in the meantime, Mystigma as well . Guitarist Daniel Korzin plays the bass on this release.
In summer 2012 the band was completed by a permanent bass player, Marco "Fox" Grünwald. Along with this, Mental Defect have been presenting a visual concept since 2012, which visually clearly shows elements of steampunk .
In April 2014 Tien Nguyen left the band, his position was not filled. On May 2, 2014, the second studio album Lost in the Sense of Time was released , also on Èquinoxe Records. In addition to the tour of the same name for the album and pure metal events, this year the band also played for the first time at Gothic festivals such as the Wave-Gotik-Treffen .
style
A mix of styles of Gothic, Heavy and Melodic Death Metal is typical of Mental Defect: filigree guitar playing and hard, Death Metal-like rhythm elements in combination with synthesizers and sequencers. The arrangements are completed by the guttural singing by singer Sanny-Thomas Wagner and the melodic clean vocals by singer Clodi Korzin.
The music, text and artwork on the first album longplayer related to the theme of "casino". The music video for the single Wasted Love was stylistically adapted to the theme.
The second album Lost in the Sense of Time deals thematically, including its visual conception, with the subject of “time travel into the past”. The video for the single Your Goddess takes place in a brothel from the 1920s.
