The Meoto Rocks ( Japanese 夫婦 岩 Meoto-iwa , Norwegian Hjonsteinane , translated on both sides as husband-wife rocks ) are two large rocky outcrops on the Crown Prince Olav coast of the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . They rise immediately to the west of Cape Hinode .
Surveys and aerial photographs of a Japanese Antarctic expedition that lasted from 1957 to 1962 were used to map them. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names transferred the Japanese name from 1962 in 1968 in a partial translation into English.
