successor Mercedes-Benz 560 SEL

The Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 was presented in May 1975 as the new top model of the 116 series, which had already been launched in 1972 ; production began in September 1975. It was already ready for series production when the 450 SE / SEL models were presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1973 ; due to the oil price crisis in autumn 1973, however, Mercedes postponed the market launch by one and a half years.

Its engine ( M 100 ) was derived from that of the predecessor model 300 SEL 6.3 of the W 109 model series . By expanding the cylinder bore from 103 to 107 millimeters with the same stroke, the displacement increased to 6.834 liters in order to compensate for the loss of power caused by emission control measures and comfort-related auxiliary drives. The compression ratio has been reduced from 9.0: 1 to 8.8: 1. The injection system of the 300 SEL 6.3 with a mechanical eight-plunger injection pump was replaced by the Bosch K-Jetronic , which was independent of the engine drive and operated continuously , which was simpler and less prone to failure , could be easily adapted to the emission standards applicable at the time and reduced consumption. It was switched to dry sump lubrication because the large engine could only be accommodated under the flat hood without an oil pan. A twelve liter oil container was placed in the right front fender, the oil only had to be changed every 15,000 kilometers.

The rated output of the 450 SEL 6.9 is 210 kW (286 hp), the maximum torque is 550 Nm at 3000 rpm. Between 1000 and 4200 revolutions, the torque does not drop below 490 Nm. According to the factory specifications, the 450 SEL 6.9 reaches a top speed of 225 km / h and 0-100 km / h in 7.4 seconds. Measurements by auto motor und sport from 1975 showed a top speed of 234 km / h and a test consumption of 23.2 liters per 100 kilometers. In the Automobile Revue test in 1976, 0–100 km / h was achieved in 7.8 seconds, 0–200 km / h in 33.7 seconds and a top speed of 237 km / h, the total test consumption was 19.9 liters per 100 kilometers .

Instead of the air suspension of the 300 SEL 6.3 , the 450 SEL 6.9 , like the large Citroën models, was equipped with hydropneumatics as standard, a system that works with gas and pressure oil. The vehicle mass was carried by four gas spring elements that were coupled to the wheel suspensions via hydraulic cylinders, which also acted as shock absorbers. The storage tanks were connected to each other and to two control units by a line system. The main advantage of the “oil-gas” suspension was the automatic level control, which enabled a constant horizontal position of the body structure and constant spring travel regardless of the load on the vehicle. This allowed the suspension to be very soft without affecting driving stability. Previously, Mercedes had only brought a version limited to the rear axle into series production, for example the 600 and 300 SE. For driving on poor roads, the ground clearance in the 6.9 could be increased by four centimeters using a pull switch on the dashboard, but with a loss of comfort.

Externally, the 450 SEL 6.9 can only be distinguished from the weaker models of the 116 series by the rear label; Velor upholstery and a headlight cleaning system were installed as standard. In the four and a half years of production, 7,380 vehicles rolled off the assembly line. In 1975 the basic price of this top model of the V 116 series was 69,930 DM - at that time you got two V8s of the 350 SE type or a medium-sized condominium. Taking inflation into account, this corresponds to today's purchasing power of around EUR 93,632.

The 450 SEL 6.9 was described on the cover of auto motor und sport 21/1975 as the best car in the world , n-tv wrote a flashback in 2015 as the best car in the world turns 40 .

The Mercedes shown in the picture above right is a version intended for export to the USA, recognizable by the sealed beam headlights and the enlarged bumpers.
