OM 626, OM 622
Manufacturer: Daimler AG
Production period: 2014-2018
Design: Four-cylinder in - line engine
Engines: 1.6 liters (1598 cm³)
Previous model: none
Similar models: Renault R9M
Successor: OM 654 D16

The engines OM 622 and OM 626 are four-cylinder - diesel engines of Daimler AG and come from the strategic cooperation with Renault-Nissan . The OM 626 was first used in autumn 2014 in two models of the C-Class (205 series) .

The basic engine is identical to the Renault engine R9M and is produced by Renault at its plant in Cléon (France) . The engine is then completed at the Mercedes plant in Bremen. Mercedes-specific components include the start-stop function, the ancillary units ( air conditioning compressor and generator ), a special dual-mass flywheel, a modified engine control unit with additional functions and exhaust gas treatment.

technology

Base engine

The displacement of the four-cylinder in - line engine is 1598 cm³ with a bore of 80 mm and a stroke of 79.5 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 88 mm. The engine's crankcase is made of gray cast iron, the cylinder head is made of an aluminum alloy.

The OM 626 and Renault R9M are among the world's first diesel engines for passenger cars to have steel pistons instead of aluminum pistons. Steel pistons with stress-relieved piston rings from the supplier Mahle are used. Steel pistons are said to have advantages over aluminum pistons in terms of consumption and strength thanks to their lower friction and better thermal behavior.

The gas exchange is controlled via four valves per cylinder ( four-valve technology ) and two overhead camshafts ( DOHC ).

Charging and exhaust

The engine has an exhaust gas turbocharger with variable turbine geometry . The turbine wheel of the VTG charger is 37.5 millimeters in diameter and smaller than the compressor wheel with 45 millimeters in diameter. The guide vanes are adjusted by a vacuum unit that is controlled by the engine control unit via an electropneumatic pressure transducer.

The engine also has a cooled low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) . The exhaust gas is removed behind the particle filter, cooled and fed back in front of the compressor.

Exhaust aftertreatment takes place with the help of an SCR system .

injection

The common rail operates with a fuel pressure up to 1600 bar.

Versions

OM 622 DE 16 LA *

The OM 622 is based on the reduced-power versions of the Renault R9M, specially adapted for operation in vans, and is installed transversely at the front with front-wheel drive in the less powerful Vito versions . There are 2 power levels with 65 kW and 84 kW.

Recalls due to irregularities

On the engine control software of both engine series OM622 and OM626 (2014-2018) there are officially monitored recalls by the Federal Motor Transport Authority for the removal of impermissible shutdown devices or the impermissible reduction in the effectiveness of the emission control system.
