The Mercur cargo ship series is a type of container ship from VEB Warnowwerft Warnemünde . After further development to type Mercur II , it was also called Mercur I for better differentiation .

history

The ten ships of this type of full container ship of the 1st generation also represented the first construction of this type from socialist countries. They were built for export to the USSR and were the first large container ships in the Soviet fleet when they were commissioned.

The first ship was launched in 1975 with the Khudozhnik Saryan . The ship with hull number 451 was handed over to a shipping company from Vladivostok on December 16, 1975 , which also received the two subsequent buildings and used the trio in the liner service between Japan and the United States . The design was awarded a gold medal at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1978 and the “Good Design” award in the same year.

The Khudozhnik Romas , the seventh of the ship series, was at the same time the 3000th GDR-produced ship that was handed over to the USSR when it was handed over in November 1978. The Nadezhda Obukhova , which followed as the eighth ship of the series on February 26, 1979, was the 100th newbuild of the Warnow shipyard for the Soviet Union.

The series concluded with the Nikolay Golovanov , which was delivered on November 30, 1979 as construction number 460.

technology

The full container ships were designed for worldwide use and had an ice class for sailing on icy regions. The ships of the Mercur series can transport up to 840 TEU containers. The six cargo holds can be loaded with 616 TEU in seven layers below deck thanks to the construction with a freeboard about 2.5 m higher than usual . The cargo holds equipped with Cellguides are locked sea-tight with pontoon hatch covers. Three layers of containers are driven on deck. There are 81 connections for refrigerated containers.

A marine diesel engine of the type 6RND90, which was built under license from Sulzer AG by Cegielski in Poland and acts directly on the fixed propeller, serves as the drive . With a propulsion power of 12,800 kW, the ship reaches a speed of 20 knots. The radius of action was given as 16,000 nautical miles.

The crew consists of 43 men. There is accommodation for eight more people.
