Meriem Lebdiri

Meriem Lebdiri (born July 7, 1987 in Algiers ) is a German-Algerian fashion designer . Lebdiri became known internationally for her work with her fashion label Mizaan as a bridge builder with the fashion style direction Modest-Fashion. The ARD called recently "The fashion ambassador" in a half-hour documentary about your work. She herself describes fashion as a source of strength that she found for herself at a young age and would like to pass on to other women and generations. With over 15 collections, countless photo and film campaigns, international media publications and fashion shows in various metropolises around the world such as London , Dubai and Washington DC , Mizaan is one of the larger German fashion labels for Modest fashion. For some time now she has been teaching costume design at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences .

childhood

After her birth in Algeria's capital Algiers , Meriem Lebdiri came to Germany with her parents at the age of six. She is the eldest daughter of five children. At the age of eleven she began to wear a headscarf of her own free will, which she describes as the starting point for her interest in fashion. As a Muslim youth in Germany, Meriem felt different and didn't belong, because she couldn't find any clothing that reflected her identity. Belly-free fashion and waist-high slits were just as out of the question for young Muslim women in the 1990s as imported traditional clothing. So Lebdiri started drawing her fashion at the age of twelve - influenced by the trends of the time and her need for more fabric - and implementing it with the help of her mother. The results included multiple wrapped skirts and knotted blouses with an extra layer of fabric over the stomach. According to Lebdiri, she already knew then that fashion design should be her way.

Mizaan

After completing her training as a fashion designer, Lebdiri began designing collections in 2012, photographing them with regional photographers and models and presenting them on her Facebook page Mizaan. Mizaan is the Arabic word for "equilibrium, balance" and stands for the unifying and balancing of the western understanding of fashion and the need for more material.

Her first customer describes Lebdiri as a woman of Jewish faith in her mid-40s who enjoyed Lebdiri's fashion very much. This made it clear to Lebdiri that modest fashion was definitely greater than just being fashion for Muslim women. Today Lebdiri describes Modest fashion as a joint movement of Muslim, Christian and Jewish women who consciously want more fabric and want to show less skin.

In 2015 Lebdiri was represented with Mizaan at the Top 10 Modest Fashion Awards in London.

The label gradually gained media attention with the internationally aroused interest in modest fashion as an industry, but also drawn from the ongoing "headscarf debate" in Germany. This was followed by interviews, reports and TV appearances by Meriem Lebdiris in Germany.

social commitment

In June 2018, Meriem Lebdiri led a fashion workshop entitled “Dream & Design for Disabilities” for people with disabilities. In cooperation with Jakarta Modest Fashion Week, even more people should be able to participate in fashion and their wishes should be taken into account. According to Meriem, the topic is particularly important to her, as she has felt overlooked by the fashion world for a long time and wants to break this feeling up for more people. The results of the workshop will be presented at Jakarta Modest Fashion Week in July 2018.
