The box word Merkozy describes the close cooperation between the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the then French President Nicolas Sarkozy , from whose last name the term was formed in 2011. A less common alternative is Sarkel or Sarkokel , which was created by the French who wanted their President to be named for the first time.

meaning

In the course of the euro crisis , further action by the European heads of state and government had to be coordinated. Since Germany and France are the two largest economies in the European Union and the Eurozone , there were repeated meetings between Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy in the course of 2011. The decisions made by both politicians were often considered binding at summit meetings of the heads of state and government and mostly only had to be approved.

This claim to leadership in the crisis, made by both representatives of their country, met with a shared response abroad. On the one hand there were politicians who appreciated that Germany and France should take the lead role as big players , on the other hand there were also voices - especially in smaller member states - who feared the loss of their own sovereignty . There were also fears that both the European Commission and the European Parliament could lose their importance and that decisions relating to the euro could no longer be made in Brussels and Strasbourg , but only in Berlin and Paris . Above all skeptical as well as negative media and politicians gave this coalition "Merkel-Sarkozy" the nickname Merkozy .

Merkozy is now a globally used term and has found its way into other languages.

With the replacement of Sarkozy by François Hollande , the term was replaced in 2012 by Merkhollande (also Merkollande ) and with the victory of Emmanuel Macron in 2017 by Mercron .
