Mermaid Melody - Pichi Pichi Pitch! ( jap. ぴ ち ぴ ち ピ ッ チ , Pichi Pichi Pitchi ) is a completed manga series by the author Michiko Yokote and the illustrator Pink Hanamori , which was also implemented as an anime series. It belongs to the Shōjo genre and the Magical Girl genre.

Every mermaid princess is born with a pearl the color of her fin. In this pearl is her pure voice, without which the mermaid can only sing terribly or not at all. Many years ago the mermaid Luchia rescued the little boy Kaito, who fell into the sea after a shipwreck. The ship capsized because of a storm brought on by Sara, the Orange Pearl Mermaid Princess . Luchia brought the boy ashore and saved his life with her pearl.
When Luchia 13 years old, she was sent to the human world to her pearl to find, having no right otherwise Mermaid -Prinzessin could be. She meets Kaito, the boy she saved back then. He still owns her pearl. When Izuru Kaito wanted to drag Gaito, his evil twin brother, into the sea because he had Luchia's pearl, he tossed the pearl to Luchia and she was able to transform. With the song Legend of Mermaid she drives Izuru out and saves Kaito for the second time. Luchia fell in love with Kaito and Kaito with Luchia's being a mermaid. However Luchia must not tell him that she Mermaid ( Mermaid 's) who saved him at that time because they are otherwise in meerschaum would dissolve. That's why Luchia wonders if Kaito really loves her, or just as a mermaid. At the end of the first season, Luchia and Kaito are a couple.

Luchia Nanami ( 七 海 る ち あ , Nanami Ruchia )
- Luchia is the mermaid princess of the North Pacific and the princess of the pink pearl; accordingly, their palace and the tail fins of the mermaids living in their realm are also pink. Unlike the other princesses, despite their pink pearl color, their hair and eyes are not pink, but blonde and their eyes are blue. This is what sets her apart from the others, but her appearance as a person also shows the most differences to her mermaid self. She is portrayed as simple and naive, but with a strong will. In addition, she is always there for her friends and gives her best where she can, even if she is very clumsy and often depends on the help of her friends, for example when it comes to school or love. She is in love with Kaito, whose life she saved when she was seven years old. Luchia's character songs are called Splash Dream , Koi wa Nandarō and Mother Symphony .
Hanon Hōshō ( 宝 生 波音 , Hōshō Hanon )
- She is the mermaid princess of the southern Atlantic Ocean and owns the water-colored pearl. However, there are several names for their pearl color: water color or water blue, light blue, sky blue and azure blue. In contrast to Luchia, Hanon visits the human world because their realm has been destroyed by the sea demons. It was difficult for her to say goodbye, but with tears in her eyes she swam to the surface. Her personality is very feminine, she knows what she wants and sometimes puts Luchia in her place. She is good at school and her favorite subject is Japanese. Hanon is very confident and likes to leave the housework to Luchia, who is also her best friend. She was once in love with her teacher Taro. He knew of her feelings for him, but was unable to return her love and it remained a friendship. Eventually she falls in love with the boy Nagisa, even though he is two years younger than her. Hanon's character song is called Ever Blue and Mizuiro No Senritsu .
Rina Tōin ( 洞 院 リ ナ , Tōin Rina )
- Rina is also a mermaid princess and comes from the northern Atlantic . She is the protector of the green pearl and is called serious. She seeks revenge after her best friend Noel has been kidnapped. In later parts of the plot she grows up and takes on the older sister role of the three mermaids. She is in love with a young man who once saved her life. Rina's character songs are called Star Jewel and Piece of Love .
Karen
- Karen is Noelle's twin sister. She was born in the first hour of February 14th and is the mermaid princess of the Antarctic . She is the protector of the lilac or crimson pearl. When Noelle was captured by Gaito, she did everything possible to free her sister. When Karen met Luchia, she thought Rina was to blame for her sister's disappearance. She is secretly in love with the explorer Subaru, who lives in Antarctica; however, he does not know that she is a mermaid. Karen's character song is called Aurora No Kaze Ni Notte .
Noelle
- Noelle is the mermaid princess of the Arctic and the guardian of the indigo-colored pearl. She was born in the last hour of February 13th and is Karen's twin sister. Noel was captured by Gaito and only freed by Luchia and the others. Noelle wears glasses now and then. She is a very funny and adorable "person". You, Karen and Coco form the second "team" of the mermaids. Noelle's character song is Tsubasa .
Coco
- The South Pacific is represented by Coco, she is the guardian of the yellow pearl. Coco had been friends with Sara since childhood. When Sara destroyed her own empire, Coco blamed herself for it. Coco, like Noel, was captured by Gaito. Although Coco blames herself a lot, it doesn't stop her from having fun with Karen and Noelle.
Sara
- They created a lot of chaos in the sea world. She was originally the mermaid princess of the Indian Ocean and guardian of the orange pearl. Her great love Taro was human, however, this is forbidden in the mermaid kingdom. Since Sara would otherwise have to turn into foam, she was so angry that she sparked a storm. During this storm, Kaito and Luchia met. As the orange swam deeper and deeper into the ocean, she met and joined Gaito. Her hair turned black and she no longer wore her pearl. The only thing that reminded of her orange color were her orange eyes. Later Kaito, Luchia and others met Geito in the castle and were able to convince Sara that she should live for the good. When Gaito releases all his strength to wipe out not only the human world, but also all mermaids, he throws his palace into doom, as it is destroyed and goes down in ruins. The seven mermaids swim away with Kaito and Hippo, but Sara has to think of Gaito, how much he has always looked after her and how much affection he has shown her. With tears in her eyes, she says goodbye to the other princesses, leaves her pearl with Luchia and swims back to Gaito's palace. She sings 'Legend of Mermaid' for him, then he comes to his senses again and the two are in each other's arms. They die together. Her character song is called Return to the sea .
Seira
- Seira is the second orange mermaid princess of the Indian Ocean to be born after Sara's death. Mikeru, an angel and the new enemy of the mermaids, knows how to prevent their birth in order to use their energy for themselves, so that his powers grow and he properly awakens. Luchia receives Seira's pearl from Sara and with her the task of protecting her and teaching her what it means to love someone. Mikeru stores Seira's energy in himself and whenever the Luchia and the others win a victory over him, a feather with orange light flies into Seira's pearl. She often appears to Luchia as a 'ghost' when she is crying, has won a victory over Mikeru or in Luchia's dreams. Enough of Seira's stolen life energy should be put back together so that it can be born. After this is done, she transforms and all seven mermaids sing the song 'Kibou no Kaneoto' together with Aqua Regina. Her two character songs are Beautiful Wish and Birth of Love .
Kaito Domoto
- He is Gaito's younger twin brother. Kaito is a very popular and "hot" guy. He's also nice, open and casual. He was rescued by Luchia in a shipwreck a few years ago. He fell in love with Luchia, but when he was in Hawaii he had a surfing accident and was rescued by Mikeru. Unfortunately, he forgot his past and he no longer knew who the mermaids were. Luchia, Hanon and Lina try to restore the memory. That is also very successful. In the end he is with Luchia.
Hippo
- This penguin had many different transformations. In the first, he turned into a human. He fell in love with the sea monster Yuri and they became a couple. The second metamorphosis was in was the famous "hippocampus". It looks like a giant seahorse with a horn on its head. He only had a wand left. Hippo is a pesky penguin and a know-it-all. He always tells the mermaid princesses what to do. But Hippo is actually a nice and kind-hearted guy.
Gaito ( 楽 斗 / ガ ク ト )
- He is the leader of the sea monsters and has the goal to take over the underwater world. Depicted as a constant wine drinker in black clothing, he has a lot of resemblance to Kaito. He was imprisoned in the darkest and most terrifying section of the seas by Aquamarine because he was suspected of being dangerous. Since he was alone, he created 6 women to help him rule the world. They were all made from fish into a woman with mystical powers. Eril looks like a doll and is very good at dressing up. Yuuri plays the piano to give the mermaids a headache. Izul can use her power to conjure up water dragons. Maria is the ice princess who uses ice to freeze opponents. The Black Beauty sisters, Mimi and Sheshe sing to give the mermaids a headache. In addition, the two have many other powers, such as keeping the mermaid princesses trapped in a ball of light or something similar. In the anime he appears under the name Gaito ( ガ イ ト ).

Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch was published in Japan from 2002 to 2005 in individual chapters in the manga magazine Nakayoshi of the Kodansha publishing house. These individual chapters have also been summarized in seven edited volumes. The entire series was published in German by Heyne Verlag from June 2005 to February 2006 . Del Rey published an English translation, Kurokawa a French translation.
Anime series
The manga was implemented by the Actas and Synergy Japan studios as the anime series Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch with two seasons and a total of 91 episodes. Directed by Yoshitaka Fujimoto and character design by Kazuaki Makida. Michiko Yokote wrote the script. The series was broadcast on the Japanese TV station TV Aichi from April 5, 2003 to December 25, 2004. The second season was titled Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure .
The anime has been translated into English, Korean, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Greek, Italian, Tagalog, and Chinese.

According to the Anime Encyclopedia , the comedy of the series is partly predictable, but the pathos of other mermaid stories can also be found in this one: a young girl can save the world with her singing or sacrifice herself for her love.
