Merril Bainbridge (born June 2, 1968 in Melbourne ) is an Australian pop singer who became internationally known for her hit Mouth .

biography

Merril Bainbridge began singing in cover bands in her teenage years. Later she also worked as an accompanist and came into contact with the musician and producer Sieuw. In the mid-90s she got a record deal with the Australian label Gotham and worked with Sieuw on her debut album. The first song to be released in 1995 was the self-written Mouth , which became an instant hit and was number 1 on the Australian charts for six weeks . With the album The Garden , she then rose to number 5 on the album charts, it reached double platinum status. Another top 5 hit from the album was the song Under the Water .

She then signed Universal in 1996 to release her album in the US. The single Mouth was also a great success there, reaching number 4 and selling over half a million copies. The album narrowly missed the top 100, but stayed on the Billboard 200 for 22 weeks . A subsequent release in Europe only brought her a minor success with Mouth in England and Germany .

After that, Bainbridge worked on her second album Between the Days . It was released in 1998, but only the pre-single Lonely achieved a higher ranking, the album itself and other singles did not make the top 50 of the Australian charts. It was also no longer successful internationally.
