Merrill E. Speeter

Merrill Eugene Speeter (born March 20, 1918 in Eyota , Minnesota , † December 2, 2006 in Kalamazoo ) was an American chemist ( organic chemistry , biochemistry ).

In 1946 he received his doctorate from Iowa State University with the dissertation thesis The synthesis, resolution, and metabolism of tyrosine isomers and analogues . Speeter was a research chemist and manager of the biochemistry division of the Upjohn Company. In 1984 he retired.

The Gilman-Speeter condensation is named after him and Henry Gilman . In 1951 he was involved in the first serotonin synthesis at Upjohn .

Speeter was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

He was a passionate orchid grower.
