Meru South District

The Meru South District was a district in the province of Eastern in Kenya . The capital was Chuka . In 1999, 205,451 people lived in the district on 1,093 km². Meru South District was divided into the five divisions Mwimbi, Muthambi, Chuka, Magumoni and Igamba Ng'ombe. Until 1997 the area belonged to the then Tharaka Nithi District. In 2000, 72% of the population lived below the poverty line.

As part of the 2010 constitution , the Kenyan districts were dissolved. The area was converted to Tharaka-Nithi County .

Topography and geology

The Meru South District extended over from the Mount Kenya massif with 5200 m above sea level to the lowlands, which was 600 m above sea level. The Thuchi, Ruguti, Tungu, Nithi, South Mara, North Mara and Mutonga rivers flow through the district, all of which flow into the Tana . Most of the soils in the highlands were of volcanic origin. The range of hills offered mainly Nitisol and Andosol , while Cambisol and Regosol were mainly found in the lowlands .

economy

Mainly coffee beans and tea were grown on the red clay soil in the district . Livestock farming focused on dairy cattle . Maize, beans, millet , sorghum and broad beans were mainly planted for personal use .

A small fishing industry had established itself on the permanently water-bearing rivers. This focused on catching African predatory catfish , trout , carp and tilapia .

Healthcare

In 2007, the residents had a total of 54 health care facilities, five of them hospitals. In 2004 there were 1,300 patients for one doctor. The most common illnesses in the Meru South District were respiratory infections, worm infections and malaria . The HIV prevalence in 2007 was 30%. Statistical surveys in 2004 showed a child mortality rate in the Meru South District of 7.64%, the newborn mortality rate was 14.3%, while 8.7% of children died before their 5th birthday. Maternal mortality was put at 12.4%.

Infrastructure

In the Meru South District there was only one paved road in 2007, the almost 35 km long B6 from Thuci to Nkubu. Five post offices and 86 telephone booths were spread across the district. In 2007, 764 private households had a telephone connection. With one branch each of the Co-operative Bank of Kenya, the Equity Bank and the Kenya Commercial Bank, three bank branches were available to the residents in 2007. In 1999, 900 households were connected to the electricity supply, 94% of the residents obtained the energy they needed from wood and coal. In 2007 the district had two small hydropower plants for electricity generation.

In 2007 the district had 272 preschool institutions, 230 primary schools , 70 secondary schools and five higher education institutions . The school enrollment rate was 83%.

tourism

The tourism industry was focused on mountaineers and ecotourists in the Mount Kenya massif. In 2005 there were three tourist hotels in the district.

fauna

In addition to elephants , leopards , giant forest pigs and zebras , ibexes , bushbucks , mountain reedbucks , brush-eared pigs , eland antelopes , white-throated monkeys , black and white colobus monkeys and anubis baboons live in the Mount Kenya Forest . Bongos and black rhinos were rare animals in the Meru South District . The elephant population was considered endangered.
