Mervyn John Allen (born October 16, 1909 in Bargoed , † 1976 ) was a Welsh football player .

Career

Allen played for Welsh clubs Ebbw Vale AFC and Gilfach FC before he came to Hull City twice for trial training during the 1931/32 season , the second time in January 1932. Allen made his competitive debut in Hull's first team as a replacement for Andy Duncan on March 19, 1932 in a 1-0 home win against FC Southport in the Third Division North , where he already marked the winning goal in the first minute of play. By the end of the 1931/32 season , he also played the remaining nine league games as a right Half- forward, but did not succeed in another goal.

In late October 1932, Hull City was fined £ 20 and Allen's registration with the Football League was declared invalid, as he was already registered with Ebbw Vale at the time of his signing and therefore should not have changed clubs without their consent. This did not end the tug-of-war for Allen, in November 1932 a league commission determined that Allen had committed himself to Ebbw Vale for the current 1932/33 season, and following the decision, the two clubs concluded an agreement that Allen returned promoted to Hull City. His only season appearance in the first team Hulls he had meanwhile on Boxing Day as a substitute for Russell Wainscoat on the left half- forward position in a 3-1 home win over Halifax Town ; at the end of the season, the club was promoted to the second division as a season champion . At Hull, Allen was subsequently retrained to become an outside runner, but came to this position in the second division season 1933/34 only at the end of the season to four missions, all of which ended in defeat.

In the summer of 1934 Allen was allowed a free transfer by Hull and he joined the third division club Carlisle United . There he was used in 14 league games in the first half of the season, mostly as a left winger, after an embarrassing 1: 6 home defeat in the FA Cup against Wigan Athletic in November, he lost his place on the team to David Lonsdale due to injury and only came back in January 1935 for two uses. Everyone is said to have left the club before the end of the season for AFC Barrow , but did not appear again in higher-class football for Barrow's first team or anywhere else. Carlisle United, meanwhile, ended the season behind in the last place in the table and the club had to stand for re-election to the league.
