Mervyn Charles Richards (born November 8, 1953 ) is a football player and politician of the United Progressive Party from Antigua and Barbuda .

Family and education

Richards was born to Malcolm and Grathel Richards. He has two brothers, including cricketer Viv Richards . He is married and has three children. Richards received his education at Ms. Ross Primary School , St. Michael's School, and Antigua Grammar School .

Career as a player

As a child, Richards played soccer with his brothers. From 1969 he played in the Premier League of his home country. Between 1973 and 1978 he played for Supa Stars FC . During this time he was two times soccer champion. In 1979 he moved to Lion Hill Spliff FC . He was active there until 1983. In the 1982/83 season he was again football champion with the team. In 1984 he moved to the United States and was a member of the Cavaliers Football Club squad until 1989 before returning to his home country and hiring at Wadadli FC . In 1994 he ended his career as a player with Lion Hill Spliff FC.

National team

Richards played for the national soccer team of Antigua and Barbuda over 50 games in which he scored about 30 goals.

Career as a trainer and functionary

While he was still active, Richard began to train youth teams. Between 2004 and 2008 he was chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association .

Political career

On March 15, 2013, Richards was initially appointed to the Senate of Antigua and Barbuda . In the Cabinet of Prime Minister Winston Baldwin Spencer , Richards was then responsible for Resort Sport. When this ministry was dissolved at the end of 2013, he moved to the Prime Minister's office as State Secretary on November 1, 2013, where he was responsible for sports and leisure activities. In the 2014 general election , Richards ran as a candidate for the United Progressive Party in the St. John's City South constituency , but was defeated by incumbent Steadroy Benjamin .
