Messa ( Italian fair ) is a doom metal band founded in 2014 .

history

Messa was initiated in 2014 by the guitarist and bassist Marco Zanin and the singer Sara B. The drummer Mistyr and the guitarist Alberto Piccolo soon joined the group. The group composed their debut album within a year, which was largely recorded directly within a week. Only the vocals and the solos were recorded afterwards. The Belfry ( English bell tower ) named debut appeared in 2016 first self-published and soon via the Italian label Aural Music . The album earned the group mostly high international recognition. Various reviewers praised the group for an approach that was perceived as innovative, forward-looking or independent.

After a few appearances and the release of the single Enoch and a split single with the German stoner-doom band Breit, the group took up the writing and production process for a second studio album. After the pieces of the debut were created together, the band had more concrete ideas for the following album, whereupon the writing process was more structured and lasted longer. Feast for Water was published in 2018 and was widely received. The meetings were generally praiseworthy and appreciative. Feast for Water was praised as a consistent further development of the debut and the group was again praised by critics for their independence. After the release, the group made various international appearances, including at the Roadburn Festival , Desertfest and Hellfest, as well as touring and solo appearances in Europe and the United States.

style

Messa's music is assigned to Doom Metal. For the Doom-Metal.com website, the form of play presented by the group is described as "raw, cold and bleak traditional Doom Metal with some unique ideas and twists". Classic Doom groups such as Windhand and Pentagram on the one hand and bands such as Bathory or Bohren & The Club of Gore on the other hand are named as comparisons and influences . The band members confirm a variety of influences, some of which come from traditional Doom Metal, but some from Black Metal and other styles of music. Sometimes the musicians refer to interpreters of jazz .

“Alberto, our guitarist, has a musical background in blues and jazz, but is also a big fan of 70s rock like Uriah Heep , Black Sabbath , Melvins , Kyuss or Graveyard . Rocco is the Black Metaller among us, Marco has always been very fond of Dark'n'Roll with Scandinavian influences and Sara hears pretty much everything. The bottom line is that we would like to pinpoint our tastes by the following names: Urfaust , John Coltrane , Windhand and Chelsea Wolfe . "

- Alberto Piccolo and Marco Zanin in an interview with Metal1.info

Bassist Zanin describes the dark jazz project Bohren & the Club of Gore, named by Doom-Metal.com among others, as the greatest common influence .

"We come from different fields and we have different tastes but at a certain point we discovered a band called Bohren & the Club of Gore. We all love that band so it was a super clear influence for us. We started from the love of that band and we put on the table everything we knew. That was the starting point. "

We started out from the love for this one band and put everything we knew on the table. That was the beginning."

- Marco Zanin in an interview with Visual Music

In keeping with these broad influences, the group's music is described as "versatile yet cohesive". The lead guitar is perceived as "melodic, bluesy and at times rather progressive". The tempo varies dynamically from "grumpy-sluggish Doom" to "heavy metal highlights". The singing presents itself as "sultry, feminine, pleasant and melancholy" sounding. The pieces meanwhile alternate between “uncomplicated metal and mysterious drone and ambient ”.
