Relief of a crucifixion group, including a skull

As knife guy one is stone cross on the Spellerbergplateau at Veldrom called that on the border of the city of Horn-Bad Meinberg , the city of Bad Lippspringe and the community Altenbeken is located. This is where the trade route from the southern Münsterland over the Weser Mountains , as well as the route over the Römerberg to Bad Lippspringe and a ruler called a junction crossed the Lippe border to Detmold via Horn. The Messerkerl lies at an altitude of around 400 m above sea level and is marked by a sandstone monument about 1.90 m high, which commemorates the traveling merchant Albert Meijer, who was murdered in 1752 . The memorial, decorated with a crucifixion group and a skull, bears the inscription:

"In 1752, on September 28th, all of us lost his life. Albert Meijer von Voltlagen prays a father Our Ave Maria in front of his sons and before all travelers."

- Monument inscription

According to legend, a traveling merchant took a break at this place on his way from Horn to Paderborn to rest and make some tin spoons. He lit a fire to melt the pewter and set up a leghold against wild animals . At work he was overwhelmed by sleep when a sinister fellow approached him. He grabbed the pan with the liquid tin and poured it into the open mouth of the trader, who suffocated miserably. The culprit searched the traveler's luggage for loot, stepped on the leghold trap, fell into the fire and burned.

The stone cross represents a unique Tödden monument and indicates the reputation that the migrant traders or Tödden enjoyed among the inhabitants of these remote areas. Renowned merchant families in the Westphalian-Münsterland area have evidently developed from this deadly state, such as Brenninkmeyer , Hettlage , Boecker or Peek & Cloppenburg .
