Methanol to Olefins

Methanol To Olefins (MTO) is a process used to produce a mixture of ethene and propene from methanol .

On a highly selective Siliziumaluminiumphosphat- zeolite - catalyst from methanol via the intermediate product dimethyl ether , a mixture of ethene and propene formed. The ratio of C3 to C2 olefins can be varied by choosing the process conditions and ranges between 0.77 in the ethylene mode and 1.33 in the propylene mode. The catalyst cokes over time and has to be freed from the coke by burning it off. For this purpose, the process is carried out using the so-called fluidized bed process (see also cracking ).

This process represents a possibility of producing olefins, preferably from natural gas , but also coal or heavy oil via the detour methanol synthesis. The quality of the methanol used in the MTO process can vary from crude to high-purity methanol.
