The project was decided in August 2009, but was already considered in the 1950s when the tram system at that time was abandoned.

Detailed plan of the first phase of the project

The metro depot will provide space for up to 60 trains with a length of 140 m and a width of 2.90 m. Each vehicle should have a capacity of around 1,800 passengers with six or seven cars. The first concepts go back to the 1940s. At that time, Bogotá still had a tram, but it was discontinued in 1951. In the city center there are still tracks of the Tranvía , which today decorate the old town as historical relics.

The bulk of the public transport in Bogotá is currently carried out by the Bus Rapid Transit System TransMilenio . The route network of 113 km on the main routes is supplemented by a 663 km long feeder network. With a bus fleet of 2027 articulated and double articulated buses and 947 feeder vehicles, around 2.5 million passengers are transported per day.
