Opening announcement of the metropolis from December 25, 1906

The Metropol was an early Lübeck cinema .

The Karstadt company , which owned the building at Breiten Strasse 85-87 on the corner of Hüxstrasse , had relocated its sales rooms in the summer of 1906 and was looking for a tenant for the vacant house. Since the establishment of a catering establishment failed due to objections from the city authorities, Karstadt leased the building to the Altona cinema entrepreneur James Henschel , who opened the Metropol cinema there on December 29th after extensive renovations .

The Metropol was an unusually well-equipped cinema by the standards of the time: there was already a foyer , and the 300 seats in the approximately 30-meter-long hall were already provided with folding seats . The seats were divided into two price groups as well as rows intended for children in the front area and reserved seats in the back rows.

In 1911, Henschel sold the Metropol to the Barmer cinema entrepreneur Otto Waldenburger , who handed over management to Wilhelm Senff , the brother of the owner of the Tonhalle . After just one year, Waldenburger sold the cinema to the café owners Karl and Otto Mauss . The management of the cinema was entirely in the hands of Karl Mauss and his wife Minna, while the nominal co-owner Otto Mauss stayed mostly in his main residence in Alsace . In 1913, Mauss had the metropolis modernized; As a result of the renovation, the audience capacity increased to 350 seats.

The last film screening took place in the Metropol on April 24, 1921; the cinema had to close because the building was to be converted into a branch of the Darmstädter und Nationalbank . The building was destroyed in the 1942 air raid .
