Anna Metta von Oberg was the daughter of Georg Wilhelm Ludwig von Oberg (1711–1762), who was co-founder of the first Masonic lodge in Germany in 1737, as well as the granddaughter of Benedikt von Ahlefeldt . Metta von Oberg lived in the noble monastery in Uetersen from 1762 to 1794 . There she met Augusta Louise zu Stolberg-Stolberg, who moved into the monastery as a conventual in 1770. Both lived together in a small apartment in the house of the priory of the monastery. Although Metta was 15 years older, they were close friends. Inwardly she took part in the friendship between her friend Augusta Louise and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . Again and again she encouraged the young Augusta Louise to exchange letters with the poet, unaware that both would later go down in literary history . Even after Augusta Louise moved to Copenhagen in 1783 to marry the Danish Minister of State Andreas Peter Bernstorff , she stood by her best friend's side, because with the marriage Auguste Louise also took on the upbringing of the count's ten children. Metta von Oberg died at the age of 57 after a serious illness in the monastery of Uetersen. The tomb is decorated with the coat of arms of the Lords of Oberg .

Today we are sure that without Metta von Oberg there would never have been the lively correspondence between Augusta Louise zu Stolberg-Stolberg and the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
