Mette Gjerskov (born July 28, 1966 in Gundsø, Gundsømagle Sogn ) is a Danish politician of the Social Democrats and was Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries in the government of Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt from October 3, 2011 to August 9, 2013 .

Life

After attending the Roskilde High School, the teacher's daughter completed a course in mathematics , physics and chemistry at the Ballerup adult education center from 1986 to 1987 . She then studied agricultural sciences at the Royal Veterinary and Agriculture College in Copenhagen from 1987 to 1993 .

In 1995 Mette Gjerskov became a member of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. In 1999 she was promoted to head of the food industry department. Between 2001 and 2004 she worked in the BioTIK secretariat of Forbrugerstyrelsen, the Danish Consumer Protection Agency at the time, and was a member of the contact committee for voluntary social work. She then headed the Center for Voluntary Social Work from 2004 to 2005.

From 1994 and 2005 she headed the local Red Cross in Gundsø, and from 1999 and 2004 she also served as Vice President of the Danish Red Cross.

Mette Gjerskov became a member of the Folketing for the first time in the 2005 Folketing election , elected in the Roskilde Amtskreds constituency . Since the 2007 Folketing election , she ran in the constituency of Sjællands Storkreds and was spokeswoman for the group for energy and climate policy. In 2008, along with Lone Møller and Lise von Seelen, she was one of the leading social democrats who spoke out against a ban on religious symbols in public space suggested by their own party .

On October 3, 2011, she was finally appointed by Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt as Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries in the newly formed government of Denmark. Just two years later, she had to give up her post as part of a cabinet reshuffle.
