MiMa is a museum for minerals and mathematics in Oberwolfach , in the central Black Forest . The museum was opened on January 30, 2010 at the site of the former mineral museum after a two-year renovation and expansion phase. It is run by the municipality of Oberwolfach, the Association of Friends of Minerals and Mining Oberwolfach e. V. and the Mathematical Research Institute Oberwolfach operated jointly.

The idea is to combine the two unique selling points of the region in an interactive museum: the Black Forest minerals of the Association of Friends of Minerals and Mining Oberwolfach and the knowledge of the Mathematical Research Institute Oberwolfach .

The museum shows minerals from the Black Forest, insights into mathematics and the connection between these two areas. Interactive installations should help to understand the topics of symmetry and crystallography .

Minerals

One of the exhibition rooms of the MiMa

The MiMa houses minerals and mining products from the entire Black Forest with an emphasis on minerals from the nearby Clara pit with films and information. A true-to-scale model of the pit shows the inner workings of the mine with the mining tunnels and driving routes down to sea level. Information is also provided about the mined ores and their technical use.

Further exhibits:

  • Exhibits from the historical “Wenzel” silver mine in Oberwolfach, exploitation thalers and other mining coins, mining lamps and tools.
  • Agate collection and display stages from the Artenberg and the Haslacher Revier and collections of the Witticher Revier and deposits of the southern Black Forest, etc. a. Wieden, Schauinsland and Münstertal.
  • Computer system with mineral and literature databases, visitor binoculars. Sales showcase with minerals from the Black Forest and worldwide sources.

mathematics

Exhibits from the museum's math department

In the mathematical part, the areas of crystallography and symmetries are explained through interactive programs. In addition, there is a selection of exhibits from the “ IMAGINARY ” exhibition, which was awarded the prize in the year of mathematics in 2008 (Land of Ideas Prize 2009), and an installation with historical information on the Mathematical Research Institute Oberwolfach.

Further exhibits:

  • The program Cinderella for creating symmetrical bodies and insights into the mathematics of crystals and solids. 3D flights through the atomic structure of quartz , fluorite and diamond .
  • The IMAGINARY picture gallery with algebraic surfaces and mathematical works of art from Germany , Austria , the USA , Canada , Belgium and France .
  • The Morenaments program for interactive painting of symmetrical patterns. The Penrose puzzle game, a logic puzzle game and the video game jReality with a 3D mouse to discover mathematical objects from differential geometry .

Films and special exhibitions

Films from the world of minerals and mathematics are shown in a film room. The museum shop has minerals and books for sale. Special exhibitions and cultural events complete the program.
