Imaginary
Imaginary is a traveling exhibition with interactive mathematical objects that was first shown in December 2007 in Munich. The exhibition was conceived by the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach under the direction of its then director Gert-Martin Greuel for the 2008 Year of Mathematics in Germany .
The exhibition presents visualizations , interactive installations, virtual worlds, 3D objects and their theoretical background from algebraic geometry and differential geometry . The abstract mathematics becomes images, “imaginary” becomes “image”. The interactive stations turn mathematics into art that can be influenced and science that can be understood.
Imaginary has so far been shown in over 20 cities in Germany, Austria, USA, Ukraine and England. Further exhibitions are planned in Switzerland and 2011 in Spain. (As of April 2010) The exhibition was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in 2008 and 2009.
construction
The exhibition consists of six stations:
- Imaginary Cube : walkable picture cube made of a 4 × 4 × 4 m aluminum construction
- Station Surfer : Touch screen for creating algebraic surfaces
- Station Reality : Virtual world with a 3D mouse to experience objects from differential geometry
- Station Cinderella / 3D_XplorMath / Morenaments : Three programs on a touch screen on the topics of 3D visualization, mathematical applets on simulation, fractals , symmetries and chaos and a program for painting patterns in the 17 symmetry groups of the Euclidean plane
- Imaginary sculptures : Rapid prototyping sculptures of algebraic surfaces
- Film Station : The films "Mesh" and "Zero Set" are shown here
resonance
In the first year, Imaginary was able to boast 13 exhibitions and over 120,000 visitors plus an additional 100,000 visitors for special events such as B. have achieved great success with the science ship. In 2008, 340 school classes visited the exhibition. Due to the open handling of the content (free download of the software ), the programs were downloaded over 50,000 times in the first year (source: Annual Report 2008, Imaginary). Imaginary was also shown in 2009 and 2010.
Awards
In 2013 Gert-Martin Greuel and Andreas Matt received the media prize of the German Mathematicians Association (DMV) for the IMAGINARY project.
