Mia Zapata

Mia Katherine Zapata (born August 25, 1965 - July 7, 1993 ) was an American musician who became known as the lead singer of the punk band The Gits from Seattle .

After Zapata gained recognition in the emerging grunge scene, she was murdered on the way home by a music club. The crime was not solved until 2003 when her killer was caught on a DNA test and subsequently sentenced to 36 years in prison.

Life

Zapata was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky . She went to high school at Presentation Academy there. At the age of nine she already learned to play the guitar and play the piano . Mia let herself be influenced by punk rock - as well as jazz -, blues , and R&B singers like Bessie Smith , Jimmy Reed , Ray Charles , Hank Williams and Sam Cooke .

In 1984 she enrolled at Antioch College in Yellow Springs , Ohio as a liberal arts student. The punk rock band The Gits formed Zapata with three friends in September 1986. In 1989 the band moved to Seattle, Washington.

Zapata found a job in a local bar and the band decided to move into an abandoned house together they called "The Rathouse".

From 1990 to 1991 they released a number of singles on various independent record companies that received a lot of positive feedback. The Gits quickly made a name for themselves in the music scene, often playing shows with their friends' band.
