The Michaëlskerk

The Michaëlskerk is a basically Gothic Protestant parish church in Grijpskerke on Walcheren in the Netherlands .

history

Grijpskerke was parish off from St. Willibrord in Oostkapelle around 1200 . In the course of the Eighty Years War , the church was badly damaged between 1572 and 1574, like the church in neighboring Buttinge . As a result, the church in Buttinge was abandoned and the existing funds were used to restore the Michaëlskerk. The faithful of Buttinges were parish in Grijpskerke.

The Michaëlskerk presents itself today as a two-aisled hall church in the tradition of Calvinist preaching churches with the church facing the pulpit. The originally Gothic church still has the recently closed choir from the 14th century and the so-called north choir, which was added in the 15th century its buttresses. These two components were lengthened by one yoke each to the west in 1770 and the church was given its current appearance. Today the parish belongs to the uniate Protestantse Kerk in Nederland .
