Michael Ammann

Michael Ammann (born April 17, 1967 in Weiden (Upper Palatinate) ) is a German composer , improviser , performer and phonetician . His creations move in the fields of spatial sound, film scoring, UKO, research, wave field synthesis, installation, interaction, music, chance.

Life

Michael Ammann grew up in Lübeck and Bayreuth and has lived and worked in Fürth since 1990 . Between 1982 and 1996 he was involved in various avant-garde band projects. Toen was founded in 1997 , an interdisciplinary collective (artists / writers / dancers / sound artists / composers), which united within the principle of "acoustic stimuli provoke uncontrolable mental projections" and had various performances, concerts, sound sculptures at home and abroad. From 1998 Ammann studied at the University of Applied Sciences for Art and Design Hanover in the field of sound art with Ulrich Eller ; From 1999 to 2004 he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg in the field of art and public space and in 2002 became a master student of Ottmar Hörl .

Use of wave field synthesis

This new technology uses a large number of loudspeakers to generate a sound field that comes very close to an original sound source. This makes "acoustic holography " possible. So far, this has been attempted with the 5-7-9-11.1 surround technology , such as is used in the automotive industry or in multiplex cinemas. With wave field synthesis , the auditory impression is not limited to a "sweet spot", a singular optimal location, but the wave fronts cover the entire room. With the help of complex mathematical processes, 32 (64, 128 ...) loudspeakers create complex soundscapes.

In collaboration with the Chair of Multimedia Communication and Signal Processing at the TU Delft , the T-Labs Berlin and the TU Berlin , Ammann composed the following audio samples and compositions:

  • LNdW Nürnberg 2006 Clinic - Amorph Fiction 1 Recycling 2 The green salon
  • LNdW Berlin 2007 - Oral29
  • AES Convention Amsterdam. Metropolis - The Metamorphosis

Reviews

Clinic Amorph Fictions
An interesting production, also in the visual design clear and idiosyncratic. (Hans-Ulrich Werner, WDR)

The sounds are well chosen or designed. I think the noises and sounds create the appropriate associations, the desired feeling and the right tension. You can hear the work and the instinct during production. And everything is very well set or mixed. The atmosphere is clear and dense at the same time - and that is certainly no small achievement. Who can you congratulate on? Do you know Derek Jarman's Blue (a kind of audio film or listening to a film about the time of his AIDS illness and incipient blindness)? There is an English and a German version of it. The work is really impressive - and I think it's no shame if your project reminded me of it. In terms of form and access, your texts reminded me primarily of expressionistic ones, for example those by Benn and Döblin. (Dr. Max Ackermann, BR)

Text, presentation and sound harmonize with each other in this extraordinary audio piece and know how to convince; you can literally smell the mixture of disinfectant spray and urine when you listen to the sterile and grotesque pieces. "Amorph fictions" is a well-done prose setting and should be a lasting experience, especially live when the audience with airplane sleeping masks lies in the center of the room. Metropolis
"The sounds of the spheres convinced us, for example in the laboratory and in the context of the Moloch." Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation (Wiesbaden Feb. 2008)

Tormentingly powerful sound waves Metropolis in the 5.1 new setting by Michael Ammann. “Fritz Lang's classic silent film Metropolis from 1927 has seen various adaptations over time, including a wide variety of accompanying music. Now the composer Michael Ammann from Fürth has developed a soundtrack for the two-hour film that breaks with the conventions of silent film dubbing - and that is precisely why it is particularly exciting. Michael Ammann, an improviser, vocal artist and composer who lives in Fürth and is known beyond Fürth's borders, contrasts the various music adaptations for Metropolis with a world of noises, a whole cosmos of irritating sounds. Ammann has succeeded in creating a version that is as puristic as it is gripping. "Hans von Draminski (Fürther Nachrichten of March 17, 2009)
