Michael Arends

Michael Arends (born November 28, 1939 in Berlin ) is a German music publisher and politician ( FDP , GAZ , Die Grünen and ÖDP ) from Rimsting . From 1981 to 1989 he was the Bavarian state chairman of the ÖDP; until he left the party in 2002, he held other party offices in the period that followed.

Family and professional career

Arends was born in 1939 as the son of the publisher Paul Curt Richard Arends (1909-1959) and his wife Gerda. After finishing school, he went to study in England and Switzerland . From 1958 he then worked for the Berlin music publisher Bote & Bock for a year . After his father's death in 1959, he and his mother and Otto Eckelmann continued to run the family-owned music publishing house. He has been a music publisher full-time ever since. He also worked as a lyricist, writer and composer.

Political career

Arends was initially a member of the FDP Bavaria . Until he left the party on July 6, 1978, he was chairman of the district association in the Rosenheim district . He then joined the Green Action Future (GAZ) in the same month. Until October 1980 he held the office of secretary of the Bavarian regional association of the GAZ, after which he was regional chairman. Since the GAZ initially participated in the founding of the Greens party in 1980, he was temporarily a member of their regional association.

On October 17, 1981 - and thus three months before the federal party - the regional association of the Bavarian ÖDP was founded in the Bundesbahnhotel in Munich ; on this Arends was elected as the state chairman. Together with Herbert Gruhl , who had been elected federal chairman of the new party in early 1982, and five other members of a working group that worked out the final version of the state election program on the occasion of the Bavarian state elections in 1982. He held his office as Bavarian state chairman until July 1989. His successor in this function was Oswald Schönmüller.

After that, Arends was deputy state chairman until October 1993. In the following years he was, among other things, the spokesman for the ÖDP working group for the humanities and religious minorities and worked in party commissions and in the ÖDP district association in Rosenheim. At times he was also chairman of the Chiemgau-West ÖDP local association . In 2002 he resigned from the party; the reason he gave for this was that the party was moving towards "Christian fundamentalism".
