Michael Fitzpatrick (politician, 1942)

Michael Fitzpatrick (born October 12, 1942 in Cootehill , County Cavan , † October 14, 2011 ) was an Irish politician ( Fianna Fáil ).

Life

Fitzpatrick was raised in County Cavan, the second oldest of eight children. His family worked there in agriculture. He attended Dernakesh National School and Cootehill Vocational School .

In 1961 he began to work in the Garda Síochána , the National Police of the Republic of Ireland. During his police career he was stationed in Robertstown , County Kildare , in Tullow , County Carlow and briefly in Athy . Fitzpatrick married while in Robertstown. The marriage produced a son. In 1972 he left the police force to work as a manager for tourism projects in Robertstown. From the mid-1970s to 1989 he then worked as a sales representative and insurance advisor. He then went into business for himself as an auctioneer and insurance consultant.

From 1992 Fitzpatrick began to be active in politics. In the local elections in 1999 he was first elected for the Fianna Fáil in the Kildare County Council . In 2004 he was re-elected. During that time, he served as Mayor of County Kildare from 2003 to 2004 . In May 2007, Fitzpatrick was elected to the 30th Dáil Éireann for his party in the Kildare North constituency. The vacant seat in Kildare County Council took over in June, his son and party colleague Daragh Fitzpatrick, but could not hold it in the next local election in 2009. In March 2010 Michael Fitzpatrick was diagnosed with a motor neuron disease . Despite this illness, Fitzpatrick decided to continue working as an MP . In the elections for the 31st Dáil Éireann in February 2011, however, he was unable to defend his seat. He died in October 2011 as a result of his illness.
