Michael Johann Herbst (born June 3, 1699 in Rendsburg , † October 22, 1762 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish Schoutby night .

Live and act

Michael Johann Herbst was the son of Adolf Tobias Herbst and his wife, whose name was not known. His father served as a captain (captain) in the fortifications. He himself entered the army as a cadet in 1716 and took part in the conquest of Marstrand in 1719 under the direction of Peter Wessel Tordenskiold . After the Peace of Frederiksborg , he switched to the merchant fleet, with which he toured the West and East Indies and China. From 1730 to 1732 he worked as a helmsman for the Asian Company.

In 1735, Herbst worked as assistant to Lorentz Lous, the director of navigation. In the following year he moved to the Gammelholm shipyard in Copenhagen as vice equipage master . In December 1736 he visited Szczecin and Danzig and bought wood there. In 1739 he joined the construction commission, in 1741 he was appointed equipage master, in 1743 commander of the warship "Christianus Sextus". The ship was the flagship of Friedrich Danneskiold-Samsøe's fleet . In 1748 he was also assigned the duties of the harbor master of Copenhagen, who also belonged to the port commission.

In 1751 Herbst was appointed head of the war yard in Fredriksvern , Norway , and was given important tasks. Since the 1740s there were considerations to open a shipyard in Stavern . Friedrich V signed these plans on January 29, 1750. Two months after his arrival in Fredriksvern in autumn, the commander in charge at the time, HR Schumacher, died. Herbst took over his post and was in charge of construction management at the shipyard from 1951. He cooperated with the fortress engineer Joachim Vagel, who had planned the construction from 1748.

The project in Stavern was the first Norwegian-Danish shipyard. It was to be built as quickly and inexpensively as possible with other planned facilities, such as a residential complex. The structures also included a church for around 500 people. It was the first rococo church in Norway and was the last completed building project in Fredriksvern in autumn.

In June 1756, Herbst took over the management of the Holmen warship in Copenhagen. He was also appointed admiralty deputy and member of the port commission, but did not become active as such until the end of 1756. From 1757 he worked as a commander, from 1760 as Schoutby Night.

Herbst was buried in the Holmenskirche in Copenhagen . His tombstone is in the east aisle of the church.

Herbst married Engelcke Martha Liebe (* 1715; † 18 February 1747) in the Copenhagen Holmenskirche on January 4, 1737. She was a stepdaughter of Commander Captain PK Carlsen. In his second marriage, he married Anna Cathrine Thomsen on May 29, 1748 (* 1706; † February 28, 1769). She was the widow of Captain Rolluf Olsen Kierulf, who had served in the Asian Company.

Herbst had the son Adolph Tobias (1746-1825). He worked as a naval officer and vice admiral and was raised to the nobility in 1820.
