Michael Köhl (forest scientist)

Hans-Michael Maria Köhl (* 1957 ) is a German forest scientist , professor for world forestry at the University of Hamburg and managing director at the Center for Wood Management .

Köhl studied forest sciences from 1978 to 1983 at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , which he graduated with a diploma. In addition, he also studied from 1982 to 1986 at the University of Freiburg economics and laid in 1983 the intermediate diploma from. From 1984 to 1987 Köhl worked as a research assistant in Freiburg im Breisgau . This was followed in 1986 by a doctorate at the University of Freiburg. From 1987 to 1988, Köhl worked as a biometrician at Pfizer . From 1988 to 1997 he was head of the inventory methods research group at the Federal Research Institute for Forests, Snow and Landscape . During this time he completed his habilitation in 1993 at the ETH Zurich . In 1997 he followed the call to the TU Dresden and worked as a professor for biometrics and forest informatics at the institute for forest growth and forest informatics . In 2004 he moved to the University of Hamburg as a professor and has held the chair for world forestry there ever since . Until 2013 he was also head of the Institute for World Forestry at the Federal Research Center for Forestry and Wood Management (later Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute ), which was merged into the Institute for International Forestry and Forest Economics .

Köhl works for the United Nations and is z. B. since 2005 chairman of the UNECE ICP Forests and is co-author of the IPCC report "Good Practice Guidance for Greenhouse Gas Inventories and Uncertainty Management in Land Use, Land-use Change and Forestry". He also works for the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe , the International Association of Forest Research Institutes and the European Forest Institute .
