Michael Kessens (born February 16, 1991 in Geneva ) is a Swiss - German basketball player . He is in the squad of the German Bundesliga club Skyliners Frankfurt .

career

Kessens is descended from a German mother and a Somali father. He was born in Geneva and played football as a teenager, then basketball. Kessens played for the offspring of the BBC Nyon and moved to the youth department of the French club Cholet Basket in 2009 , where he played until 2012.

He went to the United States in 2012 to study and continue his basketball career at university level. After a season at Longwood University in the state of Virginia , he came to the University of Alabama in 2013 , but had to sit out in the 2013/14 season due to the NCAA's transfer regulations . At the end of his university time in the USA, he wore the shirt of the Florida International University team in 2016/17 .

In July 2017 he signed his first contract as a professional basketball player with the German first division club Eisbären Bremerhaven . In the course of his first year as a professional, Kessens was used in 32 Bundesliga games and recorded an average of 6.6 points and 4.3 rebounds per match. In the summer of 2018, he left Bremerhaven using a clause to get out of his contract. He switched to Bundesliga promoted SC Rasta Vechta , finished fourth in the main round with Lower Saxony in the 2018/19 season and was only eliminated in the semi-finals. In his 30 Bundesliga appearances, Kessens was in the starting line-up 24 times and recorded an average of 7.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per encounter.

In summer 2020 there was another change within the Bundesliga, Kessens moved to the Skyliners Frankfurt .

National team

In 2011, Kessens was part of the extended squad of the German U20 national team, but was removed from the squad shortly before the European Championship in Spain.
