Michael Kluth 2018

Michael Kluth (born August 1, 1939 in Zeitz ) is a German film author and film producer.

life and work

Kluth studied Slavic Studies, Philosophy, Art History and Theater Studies in Hamburg and Vienna, then he worked as chief dramaturge at the State Theater in Darmstadt and on the stages of the Hanseatic City of Bremen. Since the late sixties he has worked as a film writer for public television (ARD, ZDF, later ARTE). From 1978 to 1983 he taught at the University of Cologne in the field of film, television and theater studies.

His main areas of focus include Eastern European culture, especially Hungary, as well as German and international cultural policy. Portraits of theater and art professionals have been realized by him, including a. about the Polish theater avant-garde artist Tadeusz Kantor , about Bertolt Brecht , Heiner Müller , the painter, set designer and theater director Achim Freyer , about the theater manager and director Claus Peymann . Since the 1990s he has accompanied the artist Günther Uecker with his camera both in his Düsseldorf studio and on his travels abroad. Several documentaries were created for ARD, ZDF and ARTE. Until 2010 Michael Kluth regularly produced articles for the culture magazine NDR / Kultur aktuell; ZDF / Aspects; ARD / culture report; ARTE / Metropolis - the Franco-German cultural channel. Since 2008 he has also documented the changing exhibitions of the Düsseldorf gallery KAI 10 / Arthena Foundation. Over 20 short films have now been made here.

Contributor to most documentaries and magazine articles: Uri Adar, Reinhard Dellit, Hubert Neuerburg, Dieter Perschke, Henry Schmahlfeldt, Sándor Várkonyi (camera); Christian Lehmann, Nicolaus v. Leuchtenberg, Gábor Öze (sound); Lutz Becker, Dagmar Brune, Ulla Dorin, Steve Felton, Ingrid Milker, Cornelia Zaluskowski (editor). The Hungarian film projects were prepared and accompanied by László Bakos.

Michael Kluth is still committed to the public presentation of his films in Hungary, this also applies to his documentaries on cultural topics in Eastern and Southeastern Europe. His central theme is still " Günther Uecker ". Recently, various film projects with Günther Uecker, u. a. "Homage to Hafez" (see Hafiz ). In 2018 the book "Günther Uecker - Poetry of Destruction - In Dialogue with Michael Kluth 1988-2018" was published. It contains excerpts from conversations that the filmmaker had with Günther Uecker over a period of more than 30 years about the life and work of the artist, and a large number of color images from the film documentaries.
