Michael Knab

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Knab (also Michael Chnab or Master Michael ) (* around 1340/50; † after 1399) was an Austrian master builder for Duke Albrecht III at the end of the 14th century .

Naming

Michael Knab was first identified by Franz Kieslinger, but was still named as Michael Weinwurm due to the uncertain source situation . The name Michael Knab comes from Franz Staub, but the last name is only recorded for his son. The more recent research therefore correctly speaks only of Master Michael .

Works

From 1382 to 1384 Michael Knab built the Spinnerin am Kreuz in Wiener Neustadt , donated by Wolfart von Schwarzensee . His authorship of the Spinnerin am Kreuz in Vienna, built in 1375, is considered obvious, but has not been proven.

He created for Duke Albrecht III. the former moated castle in Laxenburg ( Lower Austria , today's Old Castle ). The moated castle is still partially preserved in the later renovations. He also built on behalf of Duke Leopold III. the castle in Wiener Neustadt.

One of his last works in Vienna was the planning of the nave of Maria am Gestade (before 1397).

The older research had assigned Master Michael a decisive role in the planning of the high tower of St. Stephan in Vienna , but he should be removed from the list of builders working at St. Stephan due to the life data. However, since he lived in Vienna for a short time in 1394/95 and had acquired the house of the recently deceased cathedral builder Konrad, he may have been involved at least temporarily. It is therefore very likely that Michael Knab as the Duke's master builder on behalf of Albrecht III. built the St. Bartholomew's Chapel , later called the King's Chapel , of St. Stephen's Cathedral, especially since this was an isolated princely building project that was not connected to the further expansion of St. Stephen's Cathedral.
