Michael Paul (* 10. February 1964 in Jugenheim / Bergstrasse ) is a German politician of the CDU . He was a member of the German Bundestag from 2009-2013 .

Life

Michael Paul, baptized as a Protestant, attended the Protestant Ernst Moritz Arndt Primary School from 1970 to 1974. He graduated from high school in Rodenkirchen in 1983. From 1983 to 1984 he was called up for military service, which he completed in Münster . He then studied law and economics at the University of Cologne on a scholarship from the Konrad Adenauer Foundation until 1990 . In 1995 he received the dissertation The involvement of the federal states on the regulation of EC de lege lata and de lege also at the University of Cologne doctorate . He then worked as a civil servant in the Reactor Safety Department of the Federal Environment Ministry.

After completing his studies, Paul became a member of the CDU. He was involved in local politics and became a council member and environmental policy spokesman for the CDU parliamentary group in Cologne. He later became chairman of the city district 2 ( Cologne-Rodenkirchen ). Before the 2005 Bundestag elections , he applied as a constituency candidate for the CDU, but was defeated in an internal party vote against Rolf Bietmann .

In the 2009 Bundestag election , Paul was then set up as a direct candidate for the Cologne II constituency. On September 27, 2009 Paul was elected after a head-to-head race with Lale Akgün (SPD). Paul got 34.9% of the vote, while Akgün got 32.4%. Paul was a member of the Europa-Union parliamentary group of the German Bundestag .

In the vote in July 2011 on ending the use of nuclear energy by 2022, he and 78 other members of the Bundestag voted against the nuclear phase-out. As the environmental policy spokesman for the Union parliamentary group, Paul campaigned for gas extraction using the controversial fracking process.

At the end of September 2012, Paul announced that he would no longer run for the Bundestag 2013 for family reasons. After the end of the legislative period, he returned to the Federal Ministry for the Environment and headed the "Law of Soil Protection" department together with Johannes Pastor until March 2015. On March 15, 2015, Paul became a group representative in the newly created staff unit for association activities and interest representation at the Kölner Stadtwerke.
