Michael Paulitsch
Michael Paulitsch (born September 25, 1874 in Rieding (Wolfsberg municipality) , Carinthia ; † December 21, 1948 in Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian Catholic priest, journalist and politician of the Christian Social Party (CSP).
Life
Paulitsch came from a family of mountain farmers and studied theology. In 1898 he was ordained a priest and was active early on in the Christian social movement. He initially worked as a journalist in Vienna, Graz and Germany. From January 1, 1912, he was editor-in-chief of the Kärntner Tagblatt , the organ of the Carinthian Christian Socials.
In 1918, after the founding of the republic, he became a member and vice-president of the Carinthian provisional state assembly , as well as a member of the constituent national assembly . In the Carinthian defensive battle 1918-1920 he was involved in journalism. After the 1920 elections he was a member of the National Council . In 1931 he became chairman of the CSP Carinthia. After the Bishops' Conference in 1933 had decided that priests should not hold political offices, he resigned his offices, but remained editor-in-chief. In 1937 he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Austrian Order of Merit .
After the “Anschluss” in 1938, he was arrested shortly after kidney surgery and remained in custody until 1940. Then he was banned from the district and stayed in Altötting . After the liberation in 1945 he settled again in Klagenfurt, where he died in 1948.
