Michael Petrak (* 1956 ) is a German wildlife biologist and hunting scientist . He is head of the research center for hunting and game damage prevention in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Bonn .

Live and act

Michael Petrak completed a degree in biology from 1977 to 1982 at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen , which he graduated with a degree in biology . As early as 1983 he was with the work strategies of a red deer population (Cervus elaphus Linnaeus, 1758) in the Eifel to realize their life claims for Dr. rer. nat. PhD. From 1982 to 1989 he was a lecturer in the fields of behavioral research and general biology at the Department of Psychology at the University of Giessen . In 1987 he published the extensive results of a fallow deer study.

As Erhard Ueckermann's successor , he has headed the Research Center for Hunting and Game Damage Prevention of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in Bonn since 1989, which was a department of the State Institute for Ecology, Land Management and Forests of North Rhine-Westphalia (LÖBF) from 1994 and, following another administrative reform, from January 1 In 2007 briefly belonged to Department 4 of the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection (LANUV) as "Dezernat 46" . Since then, it has been assigned to the State Forest and Wood Office in North Rhine-Westphalia as a higher hunting authority and integrated into the Arnsberg Forest Teaching and Experimental Forestry Office as a department. At the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the research center in 2007, NRW Environment Minister Eckhard Uhlenberg announced that the future of the facility is secure. Petraks and his team's research focuses on hunting issues, the etho-ecology of red deer , fallow deer , roe deer and wild boar as well as the interrelationships between game and vegetation on the one hand and game, habitat and humans on the other. Based on the knowledge gained, they develop practical solutions to balance the demands of wild animals and humans, such as concepts for national parks , winter sports , recreational areas as well as sustainable use and nature conservation .

Petrak is the author of several books and is a regular contributor to professional journals , including popular hunting magazines such as Deer and Dog .
