Michael R. Taylor (born 1949 ) is a US government official and the FDA's assistant commissioner for food .

Education and career

Taylor studied Political Science at Davidson College and completed his BA in Law at the University of Virginia . After attending the bar, Taylor joined the FDA in 1976 as assistant commissioner. In 1981 he moved to King & Spalding , one of whose clients was Monsanto , and built up the food and pharmaceutical law division.

In 1991, Taylor left the firm and returned to the FDA. One of the decisions during his tenure was that milk from BGH -treated cows does not have to be labeled. In 1996, Taylor returned to the private sector and served as Monsanto’s vice president of public policy .

In June 2000, he joined the think tank Resources for the Future, a senior fellow and director of the Center for Risk Management . During this period, Taylor also worked at the Resolve Arbitration Board and as an adjunct professor at the Law Center at Georgetown University . In 2007 he became Professor of Health Policy at the School of Public Health and Health Services at George Washington University .

In 2009, Taylor returned to the government service as a senior advisor to the FDA commissioner. In January 2010 he was appointed to the newly created position of Deputy Commissioner for Food.

In the documentaries The Future of Food and Monsanto, With Poison and Genes , Taylor is an example of the revolving door effect , as the lawyer switched back and forth between industry and regulatory agencies for decades.
