Life

Michael Rosenauer went to school in Steyr , where he graduated from high school in 1902 . He studied first in Graz and then in Vienna at the Technical University with Karl König and Max von Ferstel . Rosenauer worked as a freelance architect in Vienna from 1909, where he stood out especially in the 1920s with important buildings, some for the municipality of Vienna. In 1928 he left Austria and became a consultant at the London County Council to draw up plans for the revitalization of the slums and social housing. From 1929 to 1931 he also worked in Paris . In 1934 Rosenauer became a British citizen. Because of a bad order situation at the beginning of the Second World War, he went to the USA in 1939, where he gave lectures on urban planning and interior design at the universities of Baltimore and Pennsylvania. In 1951 he returned to London and remained professionally active until his death.

meaning

Rosenauer was an important and versatile international architect. On the one hand it was traditionally shaped, on the other hand it was always open to modern trends. His first house in 1909 already shows the main features of the New Objectivity, was the most modern building of its time in Linz and is of national importance. One of his most famous works is the villa for the composer Richard Strauss in Vienna (1922/24). When it comes to social housing, Rosenauer preferred block edge constructions around inner courtyards and less monumental designs compared to other buildings by his colleagues at the same time. Rosenauer built numerous hotels and office buildings abroad. Here he rejected the then modern use of glass facades, as he did use modern forms of construction, but did not want them to be used for their own sake and the architecture should be related to its surroundings. In keeping with the idea of a total work of art, sculptures are also repeatedly integrated into the design of the building. Rosenauer worked with prominent artists such as Henry Moore and Marc Chagall .
